Chapter Fifty-Seven

Treetops clearly didn’t want anyone getting lost. Jess stopped to study the huge board with arrows drawn on it, positioned inside the reception.

‘The wake’s in the lounge down the hall,’ a male voice said as an arm snaked around her waist. ‘That colour suits you. You look amazing.’

She looked up and smiled. ‘Why thank you, sir.’ Gary’s arm gave her confidence.

‘Shall we go through?’

The lights had been dimmed but were not out completely. Coloured patterns reminiscent of seventies’ discos danced across the walls in time to the music and from the middle of the ceiling hung a huge glitter ball.

At one end of the room, instruments were set up on a stage, awaiting a band. Wing chairs were crammed in round the walls and most of the chairs had an occupant watching the proceedings. A handful of people danced in the middle. The constant stream of people coming in needed to navigate round them. The conservatory was set up as a bar.

A glass of Prosecco was thrust into Jess’s hand. She took a swig, grateful for the sensation, as the bubbles hit the back of her mouth.

They tried to follow Maggie and John across to a less densely populated corner of the room, but as they reached the middle, a man with a camera slung round his neck asked whether they’d like to have their picture taken as part of the band. He waved a hand at a board with full-sized pictures of four headless white spangled suited bodies painted on it in one corner of the room. Jess assumed they were supposed to be ABBA, except the faces on one of the women and one of the men were holes. It reminded her of similar boards on Brighton Pier, back in the days when as a child, she’d spent numerous summer holidays staying with relatives there. She was pretty certain if you’d had a camera in those days, you could’ve taken your own picture free. She couldn’t remember whether her parents had, but she did remember how she and her sisters used to climb up and peer through the face holes, not caring which one was the baby in the frilled bonnet, the overweight mother or the father in a red and white swimming suit. Her mother would laugh and say, ‘Oh don’t you all look a scream’ and they’d all giggle too.

She and Gary both said ‘No’ and laughed. Gary steered her past the man, already off in search of a more willing target.

‘We’ve missed a trick there.’ He grinned. ‘Let’s lock him in a cupboard. We could work this joint. Make some serious money. I don’t suppose you’ve got your camera in the car?’

‘Sorry, came in the limo.’

‘Sorry,’ Sarah repeated, grabbing hold of Jess’s free hand and dragging her back through the room. ‘Need a quick word.’

‘That’s an ABBA tribute band?’ Jess shouted to be heard.

‘How did they get there?’ Sarah asked, sarcastically.

‘I assume that’s the band for the office party that you couldn’t cancel?’ Jess pulled her arm to stop her and Sarah laughed.
